If this book is not made into a movie at some point I will be surprised. This was the second novel I have read by Taylor Jenkins Reid and I enjoyed every minute of it. It is an emotional but very entertaining read. I read the novel in 24 hours because I could not put the kindle down. Each chapter kept me wanting more.
The story is split into two parts and takes place in a 24 hour period in the summer of 1983, except for the flashbacks which start in the 1950s. The story follows the life of legendary rock star Mick Riva, his wife June, and their four children Nina, Jay, Huck, and Kit. The flashbacks tell the story of Mick and June from the time they met, married, and had their children. I enjoyed the flashbacks a lot because it shows how the family comes to terms with the life they were given. The second part of the book follows the day and night of the annual Riva end of summer party, and what a party it is. As the party gets closer, hour by hour new family secrets are revealed.
Taylor Jenkins Reid knows how to tell a story. I really enjoyed learning about each character and their lives. I did not want it to end. The plot was entertaining and emotional at times. Malibu Rising was everything I love in a book and more than I could have hoped for. When I heard she was writing another novel I was very excited and it did not disappoint. I cannot wait to see what she has in store next.
