The Sanatorium By Sarah Pearse

The new novel that was released in December of 2020 was actually Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club pick for February. I had no idea what the book was about other than it had a Sanatorium and it had a mystery, that is all I needed to know to read this book.

This is the first book that the author Sarah Pearse has published. The story kept the reader guessing and it kept me thinking I had figured it out, but boy was I wrong.

The renovated sanatorium is now a five-star hotel in the Swiss Alps. It is supposed to have beautiful views and hidden away in the forest. The sanatorium though was a place full of darkness and was a wicked place to be.

Elin is a character with a lot of darkness in her life and she cannot move on in her life with all of the uncertainty that she lives with. So what is supposed to be a getaway to the Swiss Alps for her brother’s engagement turns into a search for the runaway bride and a race against the clock. What Elin does not expect is to find out about others that have disappeared from this isolated hotel.

The suspense that kept me reading was...who was next because nobody was safe. It does not help that as people go missing there is a snowstorm that has trapped them and no one can get to them. That means the person can go after whoever they want and no one can get away.

I think not knowing who is next is the biggest suspense ever, and that is what kept me reading this book. I wanted to know who was doing it and why…

I only wish there was more about the Sanatorium within the story line. There was so much history and I think knowing about it would have tied in the story more. But overall I still loved the story and the plot.

I do not read a lot of books that are in the third person, so that was new and I was unsure at first. But all around having the story be in the third person gave some depth because we got others’ views and got to know other people and their lives.

The plot moves quickly and the suspense keeps building throughout the whole story. That is what I enjoyed the most about this story, it did not drag on and it was not slow in building the story and the disappearances. Each chapter brings a new clue or a new development.

I will not give away anything but there will be a second book and I will be excited to continue the story of Elin Warner.

If you are looking for a mystery and some suspense this is a book I will recommend.
